The official name of Italy is Republic of Italy. It is located in the centre of south Europe. Borders are shared to the north with France, Switzerland, Austria and Slovenia. The south of the peninsula is swept by the Mediterranean Sea to the west and the Adriatic Sea to the east. Its two largest islands Sicily and Sardinia are in the Mediterranean Sea. Further there are two enclaves within the borders of Italy. These are Vatikan City and San Merino. An estimation of 60.6 million Italians lives in an area of 301 thousand square kilometres.

On the top of Italy travellers must see list ranks Rome. Rome is the capital, largest city and takes the eighth place of the 150 to see cities around the world. Main sights include the Colosseum, the Vatikan Museum, the Pantheon, the Trevi Fountain and many, many more.

Milan attracts with one of the biggest cathedrals that was build over five centuries. Then there is Bologna with the very first University in the western part of the world. The city of Renaissance Florence, as well as Venice, with its world famous canals, ranks as most visited. Then there is Genoa, the port brings trade and tourism which is the foundation to its wealth. Pisa is known for its ‘Leaning Tower’ which makes it a very touristy place. Close to the volcano Vesuvius with its historic ruins of Pompeii and Ecolano is Naples situated.
